Doing Our Bit for the Environment

Here at Sheerwater Glass, we feel a responsibility to try and do our best where the environment is concerned. We believe that creating a more sustainable society should be a common aim for business owners worldwide, and so we’ve taken a number of steps to ensure we’re playing our part in this.

Our approach to this is multifaceted and the measures we’ve taken include the products we install, the appliances we use and even how we use them.

Energy-efficient products

For starters, we install a huge range of energy-efficient home improvement products, which includes double glazed windows, doors and conservatories. By doing this, we’re making homes around the Surrey area less reliant on gas and electric to keep warm. This means Surrey homeowners are able to save on their energy costs too!

By using less gas and electricity, the amount of CO2 being expelled into the environment is reduced. As CO2 emissions have been identified as one of the major causes of climate change, the more we can reduce the amount going into our atmosphere the better!

uPVC, metal & glass recycling

It’s quite common for us to replace all the windows on a house with a completely new set, or to replace a front or back door with a brand new one. When doing so, we first need to remove the existing product or products. However, we make sure that all of these old products don’t go to waste.

As we hold our very own waste carrier’s license, not only do we recycle all uPVC and metal frames, but we also recycle any old glass too. Recycling old products has a variety of environmental benefits; less raw material needs to be produced, saving resources and energy whilst causing less damage to the environment

Recycling paper

Although we do use paper for various invoicing and admin purposes, we do ensure to recycle the paper waste that we generate.

Did you know that paper can be recycled 4-5 times? Recycling also prevents it from going to landfills and reduces CO2 emissions by 20% compared to incinerating it. So, recycling paper can be really beneficial for the environment.

Energy-saving appliances

As part of our commitment to the environment, we also use a variety of energy-efficient products throughout our office, our new microwave being one of them! As energy-efficient appliances don’t require as much energy to use, fewer fossil fuels are used, and this comes with the added bonus of reducing our own electric bill!

As mentioned above, we do the odd bit of printing from time to time. To reduce our environmental impact still, however, every printer in our office is remarkably energy efficient. We also ensure that our computers and photocopiers are turned off at night, so they’re not consuming electricity unnecessarily.

LED lightbulbs

We’ve swapped out every incandescent lightbulb in our office in favour of LED alternatives. Amazingly, incandescent lightbulbs are only 20% efficient as they lose 80% of their energy as heat. This is in stark contrast to the 80-90% light efficiency that you get with an LED lightbulb.

LED lightbulbs also last for a staggering 35,000 hours on average, which is far longer than incandescent and halogen bulbs. Another great thing about them is that they are also fully recyclable, and contain no toxic chemicals, which means they’re great for the environment in an impressive number of ways.
