5 surprising skills you can master from home

3 min read News

Being stuck at home doesn’t mean you have to sit around bored, twiddling your thumbs. In fact, now is the perfect opportunity to add an extra string to your bow in the form of a new skill. Here are 5 of the more surprising ones you can master:

1. A new language (or two)

French flagBe it French, Hindi, German or Japanese, lockdown is the perfect time to learn a new language. Although learning a language is far from easy, it is an incredibly rewarding skill to have. Plus, being dual lingual will make anyone’s CV look more considerably more impressive.

Language books are one way to learn, or you might try a smartphone application such as Rosetta Stone or Duolingo. If you can afford to, paying for lessons where you can practice conversing with a native speaker of that language is a great way to learn too. Combining a variety of learning methods is likely to be very effective.

2. Become a novelist

If you’re a keen or aspiring writer, you might use this time to study aspects of creative writing, or even write a novel. For new writers, The Open University has a free course titled Start writing fiction that can get you on your way. However, there are many other online courses available to writers of all levels, some free and others which you have to pay for, such as this one from Margaret Atwood.
