Top 6 tips for improving your wellness at home

3 min read News

With many of us still stuck at home because of the ongoing fight against coronavirus, it’s inevitable that people’s physical and mental wellbeing will be affected. But, whilst it’s perfectly natural to experience feelings of loneliness, boredom and anxiety, there are steps you can take to help you cope with the demands of being cooped up at home.
Here are our top tips to improve your wellness at home:

1. Try to exercise regularly

YogaAlthough it’s well known that regular exercise is beneficial for your physical health, it can have an equally positive impact on your mental wellbeing. Exercising is an excellent way to reduce stress levels, combat anxiety and reduce the risk of getting ill. But, if you’re stuck for exercise ideas, why not try:

• Going for a walk or run
• Riding a bike
• Yoga
• Lifting weights
• Pilates

If exercising outside, however, make sure to keep at least 2m apart from anyone outside of your household!

2. Take time away from the news

Spending too long watching the news is a sure way to make yourself feel anxious. So, make sure to limit the time you spend on it. If you struggle to go without reading or watching the news, why not try an alternative news site like the Good News Network? This news outlet only covers positive news stories, which can help to breed positive thinking.

3. Do some volunteer work

If you’re stuck at home and unable to carry out your regular job, you’ve probably experienced boredom many times since lockdown began. However, doing some voluntary work is a great way to stay occupied, plus helping others is a great way to feel positive about yourself.

Although the NHS is the obvious place to look for voluntary work right now, your local council website might have opportunities available. Charities are another great option.

4. Be sure to connect with your loved ones

Girl video callingIt’s natural to feel lonely or sad when isolated from people you love and care for. Therefore, it’s important to reconnect with family and friends when you can. If you have the technology available in your home, we recommend speaking to them via video call as this is the most personal form of communication outside of being together.

5. Eat well and stay hydrated

The combination of poor diet and lack of hydration is a recipe for bad physical and mental health. So, be sure to eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water. You might even try creating a regimented meal plan to help resist the temptation to snack or order a takeaway.

6. Most importantly, be kind to yourself!

The world is currently going through a period of uncertainty, which is bound to be unsettling for many of us. Humans are social creatures too, so staying isolated from loved ones and being unable to do the things that normally bring us joy is difficult. So, whatever feelings your experiencing right now, it’s important not to be too hard on yourself for feeling that way. They will pass as you adapt to the new situation. So, be kind to yourself and others too!

“Used the Sheerwater team to replace a couple of Velux windows in our converted loft. Really first class experience, great communication throughout, super professional and the installation was the best we've had in terms of fit and finish and (lack of) damage to surrounding areas. Will use again!”Tim Loake
